Air Pollution in the Home

Could you home be making you ill? If someone in your home suffers from headaches that just won’t go away,  persistent colds , sore throats, coughs, intestinal upsets feelings of lethargy, or other chronic and medically inexplicable ailments. How do you know if your symptoms may be caused by indoor air pollution?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do symptoms go away when you leave the home and come back when you return home?
  • Do members of the house hold have coughs which won’t go away?
  • Do symptoms diminish when windows and doors are opened?
  • Do symptoms get worse when the heat is turned on or when the humidity goes up?
  • Did you start feeling bad when you moved into a new home, redeveloped your house, got new furnishings or curtains, sprayed with pesticides, or changed your activity level?
  • Did symptoms develop after energy conservation work was done on your home?
  • Do symptoms get severe during warm, humid weather, or when the house is tightly sealed in cold weather and the central heating is on?

By implementing some of the suggestions below could help you alleviate some of the symptoms that you or members of your family maybe experiencing.

Getting rid of indoor air pollutants doesn't have to cost the earth, depending on the problem or be time-consuming project. The solutions involve a combination of two procedures: (1) control or removal of the source of the problem, and (2) ventilation. Here are five basic methods for dealing with indoor air pollutants:

  • Isolate the source of the problem (For example, encapsulate asbestos.) This needs to be done by a qualified removal company.
  • Provide ventilation. - Installing a cooker hood or a bathroom extractor fan.
  • Provide whole-house ventilation. Open windows.
  • Purify the air. -Buy some house plants, especially spider plants. Studies show that plants filter house air, much as they do in greenhouses.
  • Regulate humidity. -Between 30 and 50% in winter and 40 and 60% in summer, depending on the part of the country in which you live, is best for the health of the house and its occupants. 

In order for these suggestions to work you would need to implement a combination of the suggestions above.
