A home energy monitor shows your electricity use in real time, in watts or in pounds. Whole-home monitors use clamps on your incoming supply. Plug-in meters measure one appliance. Your smart meter's display shows data from the meter.

Fitting and safety
Plug-in meters need no fitting. However, clamp-on monitors work at or near your consumer unit. We recommend a qualified electrician unless you can do this work safely. Also check that a product suits a UK single-phase supply. For instance, we found no UK-specific listing for the Emporia Vue.
