Solar Generators & Power Stations

Portable batteries with mains sockets, charged from the wall or a folding solar panel. Our guides show how to size one, because capacity and output vary by model.

Last updated 11 October 2026

A portable power station is a large rechargeable battery with mains sockets, USB ports and a 12V output. Add a folding solar panel and you have a 'solar generator'. It gives quiet, fume-free power for camping, caravans and short power cuts.

Specs matter most here. Capacity runs from about 250Wh to several kWh, and battery chemistry, output and warranty differ by model. Our power station buyer's guide shows how to size a unit, and our guide to what size power station you need works through the sums. Our Jackery vs EcoFlow vs Bluetti comparison sets the published specs side by side.

For phone-scale charging, see portable solar chargers instead. To see what your home draws before you size a battery, read about home energy monitors. If you only need lighting without mains, try solar garden lighting.

What to check before you buy

Check four published figures: capacity in watt-hours, continuous output in watts, battery chemistry with its cycle rating, and warranty length. However, compare like with like, because brands state cycle life to different capacity end points. Our page on how we choose explains how we read these figures.

Then size for the job you will do most often. A weekend of phones and lights needs far less than a fridge in an outage. Since solar input in Britain is limited, most owners charge from the mains and use panels to extend a trip.
